K. G. Subramanyan, popularly known as Mani to his peers and scores of students who studied under him, remains one of the most important artists and pedagogues of modern India. Born in Kerala in 1924, he was studying economics at the Presidency College, Madras, when he participated in the Quit India movement of 1942 and was debarred from college. He joined Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, in 1944 to study art and went on to become one of India’s most important modern artists. An exhibition of his paintings is always a great opportunity to connoisseurs and art students alike to view the works of one of India’s most significant artists.
